Abstract

Conflict is a natural phenomenon faced by every individual in their communication process and interaction with others. Communication practices in an ineffective educational organization is a source of conflicts among educators. The purpose of this study was to identify
the relationship between demographic characteristics, conflict management style and communication practices in an organization. It also studied the relationship between the 4 dimensions of communication practices in an organization and the 5 conflict management styles. This study was a quantitative study on teachers from 14 Secondary Schools in Pasir Mas District, of Kelantan State. A total of 274 samples were selected using the Proportionate Stratified Random Sampling Method. 240 respondents had completed and returned the questionnaires which represented an 87.59% response rate. The questionnaires used consisted of 58 items altogether; 5 items on demographic characteristics, 25 items on conflict management styles which was adapted from Thomas - Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument (T - KCMI) and 28 items on internal communication practices which was based on Smeltzer’s opinion. Descriptive statistics was used to
analyze the data; total score, mean, standard deviation and percentage. Inferential statistics was used in hypotheses testing; t-Test, One Way ANOVA and Pearson Correlation. The descriptive analysis indicated that
collaboration conflict management style’s mean was the most popular, whereby competitive conflict management style was the least popular. The results of hypotheses testing reflected that there was significant differences between sex, age, marital status, academic educational level and length of service factors to conflict management style. On the other hand, there was differences between sex, age and length of service to the communication practices in an organization. The Pearson Correlation analysis indicated that there was a relationship between
communication practices in an organization with the conflict management style among the educators of Secondary Schools in Pasir Mas District.
