Abstract

Human resource development is one of the important aspects in the realization of Vision 2020. Our nation needs a lot of manpower in the science and technological area to fulfil this vision. Our students will have to play the main role towards this realization. There were reports stating that the weakness in mathematics was one of the main factors of high dropouts among bumiputra students in IPTS. This scenario shows how important is the mathematical skills to students. This study will try to identify whether there is significant correlation between students’ achievement and their quantitative skills. The quantitative skill factor being studied was the students’ achievement in quantitative subjects, students’ perception towards quantitative subject and students’ mathematical logic intelligence. This study has been conducted on 360 form four students in 10 secondary schools in the district of Kota Setar. This study was conducted by using questionaire with 44 items. Meanwhile the statistical approach was ONE-WAY-ANOVA and T-TEST. Findings showed that there is correlation between students’ academic achievement and students’ quantitative skill. There also correlation between students’ participation level in co-curricular activities and students’ achievement in quantitative subjects. It is hoped that the findings of this study will give information to officers and teachers in planning programmes and activities to overcome the problem of low achievement among students in academic and co-curricular activities especially the malay students.
