Abstract

Organizational competency can be the key to competitive excellence. Without competency, it will result in the application of competitive strategies not in accordance with what has been proposed. The application of competency for the success of an organization is based on the study of factors affecting competence put forward by McClelland. According to McClelland, the features of competency consist of intelligence, ability, and learning. In general, the purpose of this study is to identify the factors that influence human resource competency of Islamic banks in Riau. In particular, this study has three main objectives. First, to determine the level of competence, knowledge and emotional well being of the marketing and customer service staff of Islamic banks in Riau. Second, to find out the influence of the knowledge factor, and emotional well being to competency. Thirdly, to examine the influence of emotions
, and knowledge at the level of competency moderated by motivational factors. The study involved 85 respondents in Riau. The questionnaires were distributed to employees of the Bank Riau Syariah, Bank Syariah Mandiri, Bank Muamalat Indonesia, Bank Rakyat Indonesia Syariah and Bank Syariah Indonesia. Questionnaires returned by respondents were analyzed using the regression analysis. The results of regression analysis show that the variables which explain the variance of learning disability of staff competency Islamic banks at 6.6 percent is significant. While the emotional variables to explain the variance of competence is significant at 69.5 per cent. The study also found that knowledge, and emotional well being together can significantly influence competency. Overall motivation is not capable of acting as a moderating variable that can influence learning, and emotional well being on competencies significantly. However, the study found that motivation can moderate the influence of knowledge on competency separately
. This study also suggests that in order to improve the competency of sharia bank staff, aspects of knowledge upgrading, motivation and overall emotional well-being should be given attention.
