Abstract

Recidivism in prison were oftenly debated since it gives an impact on congestion problem, an amendment of the law, prison regulations, the rising cost of security management, retention and treatment, and rehabilitation program implementation problems. Recovery efficiency problems occur because not all residivis can complete the phases of the rehabilitation program prescribed due to the diversity of time sentences. Reinstatement period of residivist that returned back to jail after released also increased. The objective of this research is to examine the factors that influence the occurrence of the recidivism problem in Malaysia, especially in Taiping Prison. This research uses quantitative methods with qualitative methods helped. Interview with the respondent and the Taiping Prison staff conducted. Qualitative information is used in order to support the quantitative data in research. Research instrument used was a questionnaire. A total of 230 respondents residivis from Taiping Prison was randomly selected as a sample based on three types of offenses of cases of violent crime, property crime offenses, and drug offenses. The questionnaire has six parts and 76 questions regarding demographics, involvement in crime and punishment, residivis perception of recovery programs, family and community factors, social environmental factors, and individual residivis. Data measurements made using a Likert Scale. Data analysis was conducted using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences or SPSS version 16.0. The correlation between independent variables and bound variables are used to see the factors that influence the occurrence of problems and related causes Recidivism. Methods of data analysis used descriptive and inferential reason for the correlation and Recidivism. Description of the frequency, the frequency correlation prison sentence residivis perception of Human Development Plan (HDP), relationships with family and community, self-residivis factors and the social environment. Description is also related to the mean, correlation or difference, frequency and duration of prison sentence reinstatement residivis to jail and the following phases of the recovery program. The findings of the research found 82% of respondents agreed, and positive perceptions of the implementation of the program (HDP). 66% agreed that the factors themselves residivis become the leading cause of Recidivism. Research findings also showed that 41% agreed social environmental factors cause a relatively strong influence recidivism problems, and 37% do not agree that the influence of family and community causes Recidivism. This means that relationships with family residivis still needed though interaction to discuss personal problems are considerably reduced. Hence, a recommendation is presented to enhance the effectiveness of rehabilitation programs and action to encounter the problems of recidivism in prison.
