The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between the instructional
leadership of department heads and instructional practices of subject heads amongst 22 secondary schools in the district of Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. Specifically this study aims to investigate the level of instructional leadership of departments heads, the level of
instructional practices of subject heads, whether there are any differences in the

and the instructional practices of subject heads. The respondents consisted of 273 subject
heads who assessed the instructional leadership of 83 department heads. The instrument used was a questionnaire consisting of 16 items adapted from Lahui-Ako (2001) to measure the perception of subject heads on the instructional leadership of department heads and 40 items adapted from Yusof Jasmin (2007) to measure the instructional practices of subject heads. The respondents responded to the items in the questionnaire with a four-point Likert scale. Data collected was analysed using SPSS version 12.0. The results of the analysis indicated that the subject heads rated the instructional leadership of department heads as high. Results also indicated the instructional practices of subject heads as high. ANOVA analysis showed that there are no differences in the instructional leadership of department heads based on their experiences while analysis showed that there are significant differences in the instructional practices of subject heads based on their experiences as subject heads. There is significant difference in the instructional practices between the more experienced and the less experienced subject heads. The Pearson correlation showed that there is a positive relationship between the instructional leadership of department heads and the instructional practices of subject heads
