Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between attitude and motivation with student achievement in Malay Language and English Language. Four hundred and two from 985 Form One and Form Four students from three rural secondary schools in the district of Tuaran/ Tamparuli, Sabah were chosen as sample. Random sampling was used for this study. Data were collected through a 109 - item questionnaire and interview. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the data. Statistic tools such as, t-test, and multiple regression were used to test the hypothesis. The 0.05 level of significance was used for this study. The result
of this study indicated positive relationships between students’ attitude and motivation toward Malay Language and English Language with their achievement in the subject.
The findings also showed significant differences in achievement for Malay Language and English Language based on gender and form. Female students had higher achievement in both subjects than male students. Form One students’ had higher achievement in Malay Language and English Language compared to Form Four students. Based on these findings several suggestions were proposed to increase the
rural area students’ performance in Malay Language and English Language subjects.
