Abstract

Covering oneself is one of the syariah requirements for Muslim women since it is a natural disposition that every female Muslim should possess. The intended purpose of covering aurah is to protect the women’s integrity compared to those who does not. This is because there are some agreement and differences in opinion among the four main mazhab which are Mazhab Hanafiyah, Mazhab Malikiyah, Mazhab Syafi’iyah and Mazhab Hanbaliyah in understanding and interpreting the Islamic tenets of Islamic covering. There are Islamic scholars who questioned the obligation of covering aurah and this is misleading the public that wants to study in depth about the obligation of covering oneself. The objective of this study is to identify the differences and limitations of the obligation of covering oneself imposed to Muslim women according to the opinion of the four mazhab, the conditions of ibadah, aurah while working and its flexibility. The method used in the research is content analysis. It is furthered divided into two categories: general data that is evidence of the Qur'an, hadith, the opinion of the scholars of every mazhab and the fiqh used in implementing a law. Findings of this study shows that there are differences between the boundaries between male and female which are between mahram men, foreign men (ajnabi), Muslim women, women disbelievers and public. This study also discusses the debate of female aurah while praying and its conditions based on the opinion of the four mazhab. The findings of this study contributes to the increase in research related to the differences of mazhab, the strengthening of the comparative method and as a guideline to religious authorities in determining dress code of a female Muslim worker and also to eliminate confusion among public about the rules regarding the extent of covering that arises due to differences in opinion among scholars.
