Abstract

The purpose of this research was to analyze the awareness of teachers trainees in Teachers’ Colleges regarding the awareness of Total Quality Management (TQM) concepts. Teacher trainees were chosen because they are the future teachers who can improve the quality of Malaysian education. Specifically, the objectives of this research were to find out if TQM awareness exist amongst teacher trainees; to find out if guidance is given to them in understanding the concepts; and to determine if demographic, knowledge of TQM, service and experience of attending TQM courses influences their level of TQM awareness.
This research uses two types of data, i.e. the primary data obtained from questionnaires and the secondary data from books, journals, magazines, newspapers and others. The data in this research was analyzed using the SPSS Statistic Package. The results of study were presented in
forms of tables with explanations.
The research conducted upon 116 teachers trainees revealed that majority of them (81%) have TQM awareness although only a small percentage of them (28.4%) stated that they have knowledge about TQM and only 6.0% of them have the experience of attending TQM courses. It was also found that little exposure and guidance were given to them on
TQM aspects. Demographic factors like gender, age, marital status, course undertaking, previous working experiences and academic qualifications did not influence the level of TQM awareness. From the research, if was found that knowledge of TQM significantly influences the level of TQM awareness.
