Abstract

The formation of the Global Movement of Moderates Foundation (GMMF) and the Wasatiyyah Institute of Malaysia serves as among the latest novel initiatives of the Malaysian Government in promoting the concept of moderation as well as a balance approach towards all aspects of life, by way of appreciating core and principal values
and ethics that are based upon the philosophy of wasatiyyah in all aspects of life (Najib Razak, 2012). Be that as it may, the wasatiyyah concept has been manipulated, misused and misunderstood by various parties, in part due to one’s ignorance or by public misconceptions within their distorted environments (Muhammad Zahir Ismail, Ermy Azziaty Rozali, & Wan Kamal Mujani, 2015). Specifically, this research study focuses on the observations of whether there exists an influence of wasatiyyah leadership to the student leaders of Malaysian
public universities – in terms of their self and national resiliency. This study also looks into several dimensions of wasatiyyah leadership towards self and national resilience of the student leaders, in addition to self-resilience being observed as a mediating variable to relationships between wasatiyyah leadership and student leaders’ national resiliency. The approaches used are sectional studies and the instruments in question were Wasatiyyah leadership, developed from various
scholars based upon Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradhawi’s 30 Wasatiyyah Principles in 2010, Personal Resilience Questionnaire (PRQ) surveys, ODRs formed by Conner in 1993 and surveys on national resilience developed by Hamidah Ab Rahman et al. in 2011 as well as Fadhilah Ideris in 2012. A total of 305 student leaders from various Malaysian public universities in the peninsular region were involved in this study. The quantitative data was analysed via the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) program. Multivariate tests, including confirmatory statistic factors analysis, Pearson correlation and hierarchical regression were applied in the research. The findings indicate that there is a significant relationship between
wasatiyyah leadership to students’ and national resiliency, in terms of the student leaders in Malaysian public universities. Furthermore, the findings indicate that selfresilience to being a full-mediator and half-mediator to relationships between wasatiyyah leadership and student leaders’ national or patriotic resiliency. Conclusively, the study shows that the level of wasatiyyah leadership influences self and national resiliency of student leaders in Malaysian public universities.
Additionally, self-resilience is also seen as a key mediator in improving leadership and management skills as a formative developing tool of a nation’s youth patriotic or national resilience.
