Abstract

As envisioned in Vision 2020, the progress and development depending on the succeed of a leader in maintaining the unity and sovereignty of the country continuously with cohesive step upon the Federal Constitution 1948 and the Principles of Rukun Negara. The students is the vanguard of countries that are expected to take on trust the leadership in the future. Students play an important roles as a national leader and must have a high level of understanding and appreciation on democratization and obligation as Malaysian. Specifically, this study focuses on the influence of student leadership towards citizenship development and democratization of education among students of public university in Malaysia. The cross-sectional survey method was applied in the process of data collection which is using a Student Leadership questionnaire be formed by Kouzes and Posner in 2007, Citizenship Development questionnaire be formed by Musil in 2003 and the Democratization of Education questionnaire by Evans and Rose in 2007. A total of 326 of students leader in the public university in Peninsular Malaysia were involved as the respondents in this studies. The findings show Student Leadership proven to influence as much as 77.2% of Citizenship Development. In addition, the Student Leadership also gives effect of 39.6% against Democratization of Education. In conclusion, the findings prove that the Citizenship Development acted as mediators in the relationship between Student Leadership and Democratization of Education. This study can be used by the national leaders, university administration and the department of education as guidance in valuing the aspect of leadership of the future leaders. Besides, this study can be used as a basic reference to increase various leadership management knowledge based on the citizenship development and the democratization of education in forming the identity of the leaders.
