Abstract

This study is to investigate the relationship between the Staff Development Programme and the Classroom Management Skills among secondary school teachers in Kuala Muda/Yan District in Kedah. There were 204 teachers from six secondary schools were randomly chosen as respondents in this survey, which involved variables related to staff development programme, classroom management skills and
other demographic factors in a 66-item questionaire.
The analysis was done by using SPSS involving One-way Analysis of variance method, two-tail t-test and the Pearson correlation method. The result showed that, there exists a moderate correlation in various classroom management skills that can be explained by staff development programme. The effectiveness and the success of
classroom management could be affected by other factors such as students’ discipline, teachers’ motivation, reward, working environment and the schools’ leadership.
From the analysis, both man and lady teachers showed a very high commitment in staff development programme and managing the classroom. Teachers with length of service less than eight years showed a deep interest in participating in staff development programme and managing the classroom. Although it is only 61.77 percent relationship between staff development programme and classroom management skills among teachers in this study, staff development programme is the only dominant contribution factor to increase the classroom management skills. Suggestions for further study in staff development programme of the future and future highly effective classroom management skills were proposed.
