Abstract

The objective of this research is to better understand the relationship between leadership style and job satisfaction among personnel of the Malaysian Army. A survey was conducted in the field using a structured questionnaire based on Minnesota Job Satisfaction Questionnaire developed by Weiss, Dawis, England and Lofquist (1967) and
Leadership Style Questionnaire developed by House dan Dessler (1974). The focus of the study is to examine the section commander leadership and job satisfaction of followers in the First Battalion of Royal Malay Regiment and the Ten Battalion of Royal Malay Regiment. Two hundreds eighteen personnel from both battalions were involved in the survey. Descriptive and inferential techniques was used including frequency test, T-Test,
Pearson Correlation-r and Multiple Linear Regression to test the research hypothesis. The findings shows that the perception of leadership style and the level of job satisfaction in both battalions are at an average and satisfied level. In addition, the study also found that there is a significant difference in both leadership style and job satisfaction among operation and ceremonial personnel. The research also found, correlation exist between leadership style and job satisfaction. A multiple regressions analysis show that there is a relationships between variable and there is difference between battalion in predicting job satisfaction. The findings of the research suggest that the army should strengthen their personnel's with leadership knowledge, skill and attitude. Priority should be given to establish awareness among personnel's the important of accomodating leadership style in difference situations. Finally the study proposed
special attention to be given on matters like pay, policy, motivation culture, intergrity and skill to make decision for leader in order to improve job satisfaction.
