Abstract

This research discusses the effect of leadership behaviour on job satisfaction among the staff of the Royal Customs of Malaysia, Penang. Job satisfaction is a factor that needs to be emphasized in an organization. This is because when employees are satisfied with the work they are doing, it will lead to the effectiveness and quality of good work within the organization. In this regard, job satisfaction also touches on
employee behavior as well as employee commitment at work. In maintaining job satisfaction within the organization, supportive leadership behaviors, directive leadership behaviors and participative leadership behaviors need to be well-trained
and effective. By using proportionate stratified random sampling, 265 questionnaires were used for further analysis. Factor analysis was conducted to identify the existence of new dimensions to the variables in this study. The results of the factor
analysis show that job satisfaction has two dimensions: extrinsic job satisfaction and
intrinsic job satisfaction. The three independent variables; supportive leadership behaviors, directive leadership behaviors and participative leadership behaviors have no new dimensions. The finding of the regression analysis shows that supportive leadership behaviors, directive leadership behaviors and participative leadership
behaviors have significant relationships with intrinsic job satisfaction, while extrinsic job satisfaction has a significant relationship with directive leadership behaviors only. This shows that leadership behavior is a determinant of job
satisfaction in the organization. The limitation of this study is that it was conducted
only at the Royal Malaysian Customs Department of Penang. It is recommended that future researchers conduct research in various departments to achieve more solid and complete information.
