Abstract

This research is carried out in order to recognize
factors which influence the achievement of Form Four
students in Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) Science and
Mathematics in the district of Padang Terap and Pendang.
The objectives of this research are to determine the
relationship between sex, race, students' interest and
initiative towards the achievement in Science and
Mathematics, the relationship between family factors
such as highest academic level of parents', occupational
status, income and parents' involvement with the
achievement in Science and Mathematics. It is also to
determine the relationship between factors of teacher,
learning facilities, references and resources with the
achievement in Science and Mathematics and the influence
of research variables towards the achievement in Science
and Mathematics. 341 students are chosen from five Gred
A Secondary Schools who involved in research. They are
the Form Four Students who sat PMR in 1995.
The findings of this study show that, there is a
significant relationship between sex, race, students'
interest, initiative, parents' education, parents'
involvement, teacher and resources in the achievement of
mathematics but there is no significant relationship
between mothers' education, parents' occupational
status, family income and facilities with the achievement. There is also a significant relationship between sex, students' interest and initiative, fathers'
education, parents' involvement, teacher, resources and
facilities with the acchievement in Science but there is
no significant relationship between race, mothers'
education, parents' occupational status and family
income with the achievement in Science. The findings
show a significant and positive relationship between
independent variables such as students' interest,
initiative, parents' involvement, resources, teachers
Mathematics and Science. Lastly, there is a significant
variance influence between independent variables with
the achievement in Science and Mathematics.
Based on these findings, few steps are being suggested
and to be taken to improve the achievement in Science
and Mathematics.
