Abstract

This study proposes to investigate and identify the adjustment problem encountered by matriculation students at Pusat Matrikulasi Universiti Utara Malaysia. The independent variables are gender, race, guardian,
rank in family, parents’ level of education, socio-economic status, previous school type, school location, streams in school, hostel experience, urban-rural home setting, and East-West Malaysia home setting. The dependent variables are the six problem areas : financial
aid, academic record, living-dining, social-personal, orientation services, and health sevices. This study attempts to provide the answer to the question of whether matriculation students face problems in financial aid, academic record, living-dining, social-personal, orientation, students’ activities, and health. The sample size for this study is 330 students, which includes 105 male and 225 female. Questionnaire is used in this study. It is constructed by taking some of the items from the Michigan International Student Problem Inventory (MISPI) developed by Dr John Porter in 1962 and revised in 1977.
Descriptive Statistics, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and t-Test are used as statistical tools to analyze the data collected. It is found that the matriculation students face the most problem in academic followed by orientation, health, students’ activities, social-personal, living-dining and financial aid respectively. It is also found that female students face more academic problems compared to male. It is found that the youngest child in the family tend to face problem in students’ activities. Students whose parents have low level of education and socio-economic status tend to face academic and financial aid
problems.
