Abstract

Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) is a new machinery in re-engineering economic growth in Malaysia. Implementation of statistical quality control in quality management can improve the quality performance of products, processes or services. However, literature on the assessment of SQC implementation in the Malaysian food industry is still lacking, especially in applying the SQC tools and technique. For this purpose, this exploratory study briefly reviewed the SQC implementation, the effective factors of SQC implementation, and tested the relationship of production quality in the food industry enterprise, and finally, developed a 27-rule- based model to benchmark SMEs by using the fuzzy logic method through structured statements representing the input and output dimensions. Data was collected using the quantitative approach through the survey instrument based on the stratified random probability sampling of the population of the food and beverage manufacturing sector; a total of 226 respondents giving a 51.77% response rate from the microenterprise (23.9%), small (26.5%), medium (35%) and large scale (14.5%) sectors in northern Malaysia. The result of the statistical analysis (IBM SPSS 23) and fuzzy logic (MATLAB 7.6.0) found that the knowledge and application of SQC implementation in the food industry was still in the exploratory stage with a score of 39.87 (knowledge index) and 35.12 (application index). Four hypotheses which were tested based on the correlation test showed that statistically the analysis were accepted and there was a significant relationship to quality production. In conclusion, this study proved that achievement of the production quality through the SQC implementation can be sound. Furthermore, this study was successful in transferring knowledge to the management as a preparation to face transformation challenges in the fourth industrial revolution (industry 4.0) by 2020.
