Abstract
The value of self-skills possessed by traditional fishing families in Kuala Perlis in their efforts to eradicate poverty is still unknown, and scientific research is required. The study's objectives are to: first, examine the existing status of self-skills possessed by the traditional fishermen families in Kuala Perlis; second, analyse the relationship between various aspects of self-skill values and traditional fisherman’s efforts in dealing with poverty; and third, analyse the differences between the respondents’ background and the traditional fisherman’s effort in dealing with poverty. Using systematic sampling approaches, the survey includes 333 respondents from the Kuala Perlis fishing villages. In this study, mean analysis, Pearson correlation, and one-way ANOVA were employed as analysis approaches. The study's findings suggest that traditional fishing families in Kuala Perlis possess moderately good self-skills, with a mean value of 1.20. The results of this study answered the research problem statement, which is self-skills significantly affect in a positive manner on the efforts of traditional fishing families in Kuala Perlis in eradicating poverty. Finally, the study showed that differences in location of habitation, the number of family members, the primary occupation of children, and the highest degree of education of the family's head have differentiated their efforts to escape poverty. Religion, ethnicity, children's highest level of education, and different respondents' marital status, on the other hand, make no difference in their efforts to escape poverty. This study has important implications for stakeholders such as the government and fishermen's associations in Kuala Perlis, highlighting that all planning should prioritise value-based programmes and support beyond financial and physical considerations. The fishermen in this study indicate that they require additional assistance in self-skill in the form of soft values in order to continue improving their families' destiny.
