Abstract

Borrowing a word from another language involves not just borrowing the form of the word but also a variety of meanings. The presence of these new loanwords provides an opportunity to examine the phenomenon of changes in the meaning of BTh loanwords in DMP recorded in the dictionary as well as the use of the meaning of these loanwords among teenage speakers compared to the existing meanings in DMP and BTh. As previous studies are more of a surface study, therefore, there is a need to conduct studies using more extensive data. In order to examine the existence of loanwords, the existing meaning will be clarified based on a comparison with the dictionary of the source language. While the explanation of the phenomenon of the use of loanwords is examined based on the current situation. Nine loan words that represent the category of meaning change according to word type, namely meaning expansion (rakbok, perak, koho), meaning narrowing (nak, kehek, sokmo), and meaning change (chuk, buk, laik) were obtained from the dictionary based on the development of changes in the meaning of the selected words and analysed using the grammaticalization process approach. The results of the analysis show that the nine words studied have produced new meanings that are significant and interesting. However, the tendency to produce new meanings that are different from the existing meanings in the dictionary is still influenced by the meaning of word in the source language. In particular, this study is able to explain the phenomenon of changes in the meaning of BTh loanwords in DMP which has the potential to be documented in the DMP dictionary and is even able to explain the phenomenon of the use of the analyzed words.
