Abstract

The participation of youth in various entrepreneurship programs, especially those conducted in FELDA schemes, has received less than satisfactory response. Hence, this study aims to examine the readiness of youth in FELDA communities, particularly in the state of Perlis, to venture into entrepreneurship. The objectives of the study are to identify the level of interest among FELDA youth in Perlis in entrepreneurship, analyze the perception of FELDA youth in Perlis regarding entrepreneurship, and determine the level of parental encouragement for FELDA youth in Perlis to engage in entrepreneurship. This study utilizes a qualitative method approach, employing semi-structured interviews with 10 FELDA youth in Perlis and focus group discussions with another 10 FELDA youth in Perlis to explore the perspectives, experiences, and perceptions of FELDA youth regarding entrepreneurship. Quantitative methods are also employed to gather statistical data on demographic characteristics, educational backgrounds, and economic factors that may affect the involvement of FELDA youth in entrepreneurship. The study findings reveal that 60% of respondents have a high interest in venturing into entrepreneurship, 60% of respondents hold very positive views about the idea of FELDA youth entering entrepreneurship, and 80% of respondents agree that most FELDA parents consistently encourage their young ones to pursue entrepreneurship. In conclusion, family background does not influence FELDA youth to become entrepreneurs. Instead, three other factors, which are motivation, attitude, and skills, play crucial roles in driving them towards entrepreneurship. However, when the relationship between these four factors and entrepreneurial achievement is examined, the study results indicate mostly very weak direct and inverse relationships.
