Abstract

This thesis explores the pivotal role of Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) in catalyzing socioeconomic development in Perlis through the prism of social entrepreneurship activities, addressing a significant gap in the literature regarding the specific contributions of academic institutions to the broader socioeconomic landscape. The research underscores the imperative for a comprehensive understanding of how UniMAP’s involvement in social entrepreneurship initiatives shapes the socioeconomic development of Perlis, recognizing the pivotal role universities can play in fostering community development through innovative and sustainable social enterprises. Guided by research questions focused on unraveling the nature, extent, and impact of UniMAP’s social entrepreneurship involvement, the study aims to assess the scope and scale of these activities, analyze influencing factors, and evaluate tangible socioeconomic outcomes. By addressing the scarcity of empirical investigations into the role of specific universities, particularly UniMAP, in driving socioeconomic development through social entrepreneurship in the unique context of Perlis, this study bridges a crucial gap, providing valuable insights for academic discourse and practical policymaking. Methodologically, a qualitative approach involving semi-structured interviews, focus group discussion and content analysis captures perspectives from key stakeholders, enabling a nuanced understanding of UniMAP’s multifaceted impact. The findings reveal key success factors, challenges, and tangible outcomes, contributing a comprehensive analysis that expands academic discourse and offers practical insights for policymakers, university administrators, and the broader community.
