Abstract

Job satisfaction is one of the elements in improving the teaching profession. The issue of special education teachers leaving the profession because of job dissatisfaction factor needs to be perused so as not to worsen the current situation. This study aims at examining the contributing factors on the job satisfaction of special education teachers. Aspects of administrator support, self-efficacy and teacher interest towards profession were tested for their contribution to the job satisfaction of special education teachers. The sample of this study consisted of 235 special education teachers from integrated secondary schools in Pulau Pinang. Group sampling method and random sampling process were employed in this study. The implementation of the study is based on a cross-sectional survey study through a quantitative approach. This study used the administrator's support questionnaire to measure the administrative support on the special education teachers, Teachers' Sense of Efficacy Scale to measure the self-efficacy aspects, The Teacher Interest Scale to measure the aspects of teacher interest towards the profession and Job Satisfaction Index Survey instrument to measure the aspects of teacher's job satisfaction. The data collected were analysed using descriptive analysis, t-test and ANOVA. The measurement model was reported based on the Confirmatory Factor Analysis conducted. The findings showed that the predictor variables contributed 64.5% of the variance on the teacher’s job satisfaction. The aspect of interest in profession becomes a major contributor to teacher’s job satisfaction followed by self-efficacy and the aspect of administrator support. This study also showed that the teacher’s interest toward teaching profession becomes a mediator in the relationship between the administrator’s support and self-efficacy on teacher’s job satisfaction. The contribution of this study is a structured model built as a guide in improving the level of job satisfaction of teachers especially for special education teachers
