The impact of modern Chinese conductors on bridging tradition and innovation : A perspective from Beijing's orchestral conductors

Beijing conductors integrate Chinese traditions with Western techniques, guiding orchestras through processes of modernisation and cultural transformation. However, the impact of modernisation on Chinese orchestra conductors has not been systematically analysed, revealing a significant gap in existing scholarship, which has largely overlooked how coductor’s adapt, negotiate, and transform their practices within contemporary orchestral contexts. The research aims to identify the cultural , social, artistic, and technical factors that influence conductor development, and to construct a conceptual model explaining how conductors bridge tradition and inovation . This research hypothesises that their professional growth and adaptive strategies can be systematically explained through an integrated model, offering both theoretical insights and practical guidance for sustainable orchestral practice. This research employs a qualitative research method to achieve its research aims, developing an interview protocol underpinned from Communities of Practice and Sustainable Development theories. Data were collected through in depth interviews with five prominent Beijing based conductors, focusing on their experiences with the modern Chinese orchestra. Thematic analysis revealed recurring patterns in the conductors' experiences . The findings identify ten key factors influencing conductors ' adaptation proces : cultural adaptation, musical integration , leadership skills, social acceptance, personal style, international exchange, cultural mission, balancing innovation and tradition, music education, and institutional constraints. These factors are synthesised into a conceptual model, which was further validated by experts to confirm its clarity and applicability. The research develops a conceptual model that integrates cultural, social, artistic and technical factors, demonstrating how modern Chinese conductors balance tradition and innovation while adapting to institutional, educational, and audience driven challenges. This research addresses the competencies required in modern Chinese orchestras and offers strategic insights for educators, policymakers, and practitioners to enhance conductor training and support cultural sustainability in orchestral practice
