Abstract

This study examines the relationship between personality traits of conscientiousness and agreeableness with integrity non-compliance among police officers in the Perlis Contingent from 2020 to 2024. The main objectives of the study are: (1) to understand how police officers interpret the concept of integrity, (2) to examine how the trait of conscientiousness influences perceptions and experiences related to integrity non compliance, and (3) to explore the role of agreeableness in shaping behaviours and decisions concerning integrity. This research adopts a qualitative approach involving document analysis, in-depth interviews with 10 to 15 police officers of various ranks, focus group discussions, and personal observations. The findings reveal that police officers perceive integrity as a multi-dimensional concept encompassing honesty, impartiality, consistency, adherence to rules, and commitment to public service. Conscientiousness was found to positively influence integrity compliance, although in certain contexts it may lead to rigidity and a lack of sensitivity in contextual decisionmaking. On the other hand, agreeableness plays a significant role in fostering interpersonal relationships and public trust, but it needs to be balanced with objectivity and fair law enforcement. In addition to personality factors, organizational elements such as leadership, culture, and support systems also influence integrity practices among officers. The study emphasizes that maintaining integrity in the police force requires a continuous, adaptive and collaborative approach. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the dynamics of integrity within the law enforcement context in Malaysia and can help inform more effective strategies to strengthen a culture of integrity among police officers.
