Abstract
Needlestick injuries are among the most critical occupational risks among healthcare trainees that can expose them to dangerous blood-borne pathogen infections. This research was conducted with the aim to identify the influence between knowledge, attitude and perception towards needlestick injury risk prevention practices among Assistant Medical Officer trainees at the Ministry of Health Training Institute (ILKKM) Alor Setar. This quantitative study involved a total of 135 respondents using a questionnaire instrument covering demographic variables, knowledge, attitude, perception, and prevention practices. Pearson correlation analysis results showed that there is a significant positive relationship between knowledge and attitude with prevention practices. However, the perception factor did not show a significant relationship in the correlation analysis. Subsequently, multiple regression analysis revealed that the influence of knowledge is the most dominant and significant contributor in shaping prevention practices. Conversely, the perception factor showed a significant negative influence, while the attitude factor was found to have no significant influence on practices in this model. In addition, findings showed that demographic factors do not significantly influence prevention practices, while Hepatitis B vaccination status recorded comprehensive compliance. In conclusion, safety practices among trainees are more influenced by the mastery of high technical knowledge. The implications of this study emphasize the need for ILKKM management to continue strengthening educational modules related to safety procedures to ensure optimum prevention practices among trainees to guarantee occupational safety in the health sector.
