Integrating bel canto into Chinese vocal music: toward improved vocal performance in Chinese vocational colleges

Chinese vocal music, a fusion of traditional artistry and cultural identity, has struggled to keep pace with contemporary vocal pedagogy. In many Chinese vocational colleges, vocal training remains reliant on replication-based and fragmented teaching methods that hinder students’ technical and expressive growth. Integrating Bel Canto into Chinese vocal pedagogy presents an opportunity to modernize teaching practices, enhance performance quality, and bridge Eastern and Western musical methodologies within a multicultural educational model. The study aims to identify and evaluate core Bel Canto elements: Singing Breath, Articulators, Singing Resonance, Articulation, and Singing Emotion for integration into Chinese vocal pedagogy. It hypothesizes that a cumulative, standardized application of these elements that improves students’ technical control, expressive quality, and overall performance. Grounded in Multicultural Education Theory, this qualitative research identifies and integrates five core Bel Canto elements into Chinese vocal pedagogy. Data were gathered through six expert interviews and classroom-based interventions with students from a Chinese vocational college. Analysis using grounded theory coding revealed that the systematic adoption based on identified five elements. The study establishes a structured and teachable model that bridges traditional Chinese vocal aesthetics with scientific vocal methodology. Findings revealed that integrating the five elements enhanced Chinese vocal performance through interconnected physiological and expressive mechanisms. Overall, it extends multicultural pedagogy into the domain of vocal training; practically, it offers educators a replicable model to guide skill progression and performance assessment. This study contributes to the advancement of Chinese vocal pedagogy by demonstrating how structured and research-based teaching methods of Bel Canto can revitalize traditional music education. It provides educators with a replicable model for developing vocal skills progressively within limited vocational settings. On a broader level, the research supports the evolution of music education in China toward a more balanced, evidence-driven, and globally informed approach, ensuring that traditional artistry remains relevant in contemporary society.
