Pattern design and cultural integration : Towards a framework for embedding traditional Chinese auspicious patters in smart furniture

This study investigates how traditional Chinese auspicious patterns can be systematically integrated into smart furniture design by addressing the current lack of cultural expressiveness and aesthetic differentiation in the market. A theoretically informed framework was developed by synthesising Cultural Semiotics, Experience Design Theory, and Market and Consumer Behavior Theory, conceptualising pattern shapes and colors as symbolic design variables that influence aesthetic effect and user acceptance, with demographic factors acting as moderators. A quantitative crosssectional survey generated 611 valid responses, and the hypothesised relationships were examined using reliability and validity testing, correlation analysis, multiple regression, hierarchical moderation, and cross-tabulation. The results demonstrate that the symbolic attributes of auspicious patterns significantly affect users’ aesthetic evaluations and acceptance intentions, while gender, age, place of living, income, and education exert selective moderating effects. The study contributes theoretically by operationalising cultural symbolism into measurable constructs, extending the application of Cultural Semiotics and Experience Design Theory into the smart furniture domain, and highlighting how demographic variability shapes culturally embedded design preferences. Based on these findings, the study proposes a user-informed Smart Furniture Cultural Design Guideline (FuSCaDe) to support the systematic, culturally grounded integration of traditional patterns into contemporary product design. By situating auspicious patterns within broader discussions on cultural continuity, symbolic meaning, and global-local design convergence, this study provides a coherent framework that advances both academic understanding and practical innovation in culturally oriented design
