Abstract

The presence of Sikorsky S61A-4 Nuri helicopters in the history of national defence coincided with the insurrection of the communist insurgency in Peninsular Malaysia during the period of 1968-1989. Nuri helicopter was an important element of air
power providing air mobility for the security forces (SF) during the period of study in accordance with the theory of air power. However, due to a few mishaps, certain quarters feel they are no longer relevant as the nation’s defence assets. The objective
of this research is to study the history of the Nuri during the communist insurgency era in Peninsular Malaysia. It examines their roles against communist guerrillas in three operations namely Op Bamboo, Op Gubir I and Op Selamat Sawadee. It also studies in detail the challenges faced by the Nuris while performing their missions. This historical research uses a qualitative approach. The primary elements in this research are library research and interviews. Library research refers to records from the National Archives, National Security Council, Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF), Royal Malaysian Police, British official documents, Central Intelligence Agency and
State Department of USA. Personalities interviewed include prominent members of MAF, Nuri and Alouette III helicopter veterans and members of SF. The main finding of this research is that the Nuris contributed towards the signing of the Peace
Agreement at Hat Yai on 2 December 1989. In addition, their procurement became a reality due to Malaysia’s anti-communist foreign policy and the good relationship between Tunku Abdul Rahman and President Johnson. This study proves the esprit de corps between the Nuri crew and SF boosted their morale during operations. This research shows that air power plays a significant role in contributing towards
defending the sovereignty of a nation.
