Abstract

The study aims to identify factors in the patient-doctor relationship, and its effect on communication satisfaction among 247 HIV/AIDS high-risk patients. The factors studied were demographic background of patients, health status, non-verbal communication, empathy level, consultancy satisfaction and autonomy satisfaction
as well as the effect of moderators of HIV/ AIDS patients and the overall satisfaction of the service system. These factors were selected based on a theoretical framework adapted from the Davis Empathy Model (1983) and Larson & Yao (2005) and analysed with the Partial Least Square Structural Equation Model (PLS-SEM).
Thematic analysis of qualitative data obtained through focus group discussion among 13 physicians have also been conducted aimed at identifying the deeper meaning of doctor-patient relationships and their effect on patient communication satisfaction. Findings shown that the empathy model is relevant and suitable for use
in health services. This study also found that the individual background and situation, non-verbal communication and empathy level influenced significantly on the patient satisfaction of consultation and autonomy. Status of HIV patients and the
overall satisfaction of the healthcare system was also found to have a significant effect on the doctor-patient relationship. The implication of the study on the empathy model and training and medical education system towards creating a better health service delivery systems have also been discussed.
