Abstract
This study investigated the relationship between government assistance, entrepreneurial competencies, family support and business performance of women entrepreneurs of Acheh in Indonesia. It also examined the moderating effect of the business environment on the relationship between government assistance,
entrepreneurial competencies, family support and business performance of women entrepreneurs. The study was motivated by the inconsistent findings in the literature on the relationship between government assistance, entrepreneurial competencies,
family support and business performance. These inconsistencies led to a new stream of research that indicated the importance of examining the effect of potential moderating variables that could clarify such a relationship. This study was underpinned by the resources-based view theory (RBV) and the contingency theory in
order to explain the proposed conceptual framework. Only 133 questionnaires were deemed usable for actual data analysis using the Pearson correlation. The direct and indirect relationships between the variables were analyzed using the hierarchical
regression. This study found that government assistance and family support had positive and significant relationships with the business performance of women entrepreneurs. However, entrepreneurial competencies had negative and significant relationships with the business performance of women entrepreneurs. This study also
found that the business environment moderated the relationship between government assistance, family support and business performance of women entrepreneurs but did not moderate the relationship between entrepreneurial competencies and the business performance of women entrepreneurs. Finally, this study discussed the implications of the findings, limitations and directions for future research.
