Abstract
The usage of streaming multimedia in e-learning increased because of the increase in computer production and Internet usage all over the world (Cattagni & Farris, 2001).
Nowadays a lot of schools and big organizations are using e-learning packages that include streaming multimedia process in it (Shea-Schultz & Fogarty, 2002). As a result, streaming server developers are competing aggressively in the development of streaming server application. These resulting e-learning system administrators hardly decide which is the best streaming technology that suits the current server specifications and network technology.
The objectives of this research are to determine the impact of these two popular streaming servers, Windows Media Server (WMS) and Helix Universal Server (HUS), on the server machine itself. Research focusing on the continuity of the streaming process and resource usage factor in server machine. Experiments are done in isolated network employing both streaming server technologies to collect data. Streaming server performance is logged and analyzed during the experiment to determine the impact of streaming server applications using predefined research parameter.
Overall analysis on the streaming media performance shows that WMS is less of a burden the server machine compared to HUS. Analysis on the experiment remarks that the technical difference between WMS and HUS is the main cause of the result.
