Abstract
The study was conducted to identify the polarization of academic performances among the matriculation students, STPM holders and diploma holders of Universiti Utara Malaysia Sintok.The independent variables of the study consisted of the students school background, "latarbelakang lulusan", the number of years
undertaken for the programme, mathematical and English background. The dependent variable consisted of the semester examination result of sem 1 students of 1994/1995 until the end of sem 97/98. The students' CGPA were examined as follow; 3.5 and above, 3.00 until 3.49, 2.50 until 2.99, 2.00 until 2.49 and 1.99 and below. The sample comprised of 576 students of which 200 were Matriculation
students, 201 were STPM holders and 175 were Diploma holders. The method used to analyse the students CGPA performances was adapted from the Michigan International Students Problem Inventory (MISPI) created by Dr. John Wilson Porte in 1962 and later revised in 1977. Data were analysed by the usage of descriptive statistical and crosstabs analysis. The research showed that there were a few factor affecting the polarization of students academic performance, among which the major factors were their mathematical and English background.
