Abstract

This research has been undertaken to determine the factors influencing students in selecting Technical Schools as their choice of school. Specifically, the purpose of this research is to find out whether the demographic, PMR performance, family sosio-economic status, school and the environment factor would have any influence on the student
selecting the particular Technical School. The research has been carried out on 280 form four respondents from Technical Schools in the district of Kota Setar, Kedah Darul Aman. The selection of the respondents is based
on the stratified random sampling method. A set of questionaires comprising of 43 items has been used in this research which covers the aspects of demography, performance in four main subjects in PMR, family
sosio-economic status, school and also the environment. The statistical instruments used in this research have been the measurement of central tendency and variabilities which include frequency, percentage, min and standard deviation. The test of hypothesis has been carried out based on the crosstabulation Chi Square method to determine the relationship between dependent and independent variables. The result from this research have shown a significant relationship between the students’
choice of Technical School and the demography factors; race, medium in school, previous school, sequence in the family and the distance of the choosen school. However, gender and the number of siblings in the family did not show any significant relationship on the selection of school. Furthermore, there is also no significant relationship on the students’ PMR performance in subjects like Bahasa Melayu, Mathematics, Sciences and Living Skills. In addition to that, the family sosio-economic status has shown negative results on the choices made by students’ on the particular school. On the contrary, schools with excellent result, good facilities and
located closely have shown a significant relationship on the selection of schools by the students. Furthermore, peer influence, problems in previous school, ambition and interest in Science and Technology have favoured students to choose Technical School as their choice of school.
Whereas, other variables like decipline, culture, teachers and school environment have not shown any positive relationship on the students’ choice of school. From this research, 63.2% of the respondents have made their own decision in selecting the Technical School. About 26.8%
have made their decision by discussing with parents and the remainder through the help of brothers, sisters and others.
