Abstract

Basic writing skills must be mastered by non-native students learning Arabic in Malaysia. This is especially important in Al-Lughah Al-Arabiah Al-Muasirah (LAM) at Sekolah Agama Bantuan Kerajaan (SABK). However, most students in Malaysia still struggle with Arabic writing skills due to their limited vocabulary mastery and lack of practice in applying learning strategies in their daily lives. Therefore, this study was conducted to identify the influence of vocabulary learning and cognitive strategies on Arabic writing skills for the subject LAM in SABK in Kedah. This quantitative study in the form of a cross-sectional survey involved 362 students who were randomly selected from several SABK schools of each district in Kedah. The findings indicate that the variables of vocabulary learning, cognitive strategies and Arabic writing skills are at high level. Additionally, the study findings indicate a positive and significant relationship between vocabulary learning and Arabic writing skills, although the correlation is weak. In contrast, the relationship between cognitive strategies and Arabic writing skills is positive and significant, with a moderate correlation strength. Meanwhile, vocabulary learning and cognitive strategies have a significant influence on Arabic writing skills. Regression analysis results indicate that only 10.8% and 27.8% of the variance in writing skills can be explained by vocabulary learning and cognitive strategies, respectively. Although vocabulary learning and cognitive strategies do not show a large influence, both of these variables also contribute to the improvement of Arabic writing skills of students, especially in LAM subjects. The information of the findings in this study serves as a basis for LAM subject teachers to improve Arabic writing skills among students and provide a positive impact on the progress of Arabic language education in Malaysia, especially in SABK, Kedah.
