The study about the influences factors on the selection of candidates by the voters is very important because of the uncertainty in the Malaysian political landscape and for the first time in the political history in Malaysia, Barisan Nasional denied the two-thirds majority in parliament and lost five strategic states. Stakeholders are eager to know whether the changes were permanent or merely temporary phenomenon and able to be change in the next general election. This study applied interviews as a medium to understand the behavior of voters in choosing the candidates. The five term periods held by Datuk Sri Chor Chee Heung is not a guarantee to ensure that the Barisan Nasional will continue to have a mandate from the people in Alor Setar parliamentary even
with the same candidate. The rising of nationalism as well as the use of social media have also contributed to the victory of Gooi Hsiao Leung (PKR) to attract young voters. The qualitative methods are used in this study. Fifteen randomly voters selected from the party. In addition, interviews were also conducted with Barisan Nasional candidate, Datuk Seri Chor Chee Heung and YB Gooi Hsiao Leung from PKR. Findings show, the main element in this study is about the party factor and the side factor is the current issues. This study has at least opened up a new dimension in the election factors in Malaysia. The study’s result shows that certain voting aspects should be taken seriously to provide a new perspective to meet the understanding about political elections and voting behavior among the voters.
