Abstract
The Lembaga Zakat Negeri Kedah (LZNK), is one of the state zakat institutions responsible for the management of zakat in Malaysia. The main function of the Malaysian zakat institution is to collect zakat and distribute it to eight asnaf groups such as the poor and needy. One form of assistance provided to asnaf entrepreneurs is financial assistance or equipment to develop their business. LZNK expects the provision of capital can help them generate long-term income and change from asnaf to zakat payers. However, the data show that the rate of successful asnaf entrepreneurs is still low. Therefore, this study explores the concept of successful asnaf entrepreneur’s performance and identify actions that need to be taken by zakat institutions in developing the performance of asnaf entrepreneur. This study is a qualitative research where data is collected through in-depth interviews with selected entrepreneurs who got entrepreneur assistance from LZNK, some academic experts and entrepreneurs’ practitioner. Findings show that to improve their quality of life, asnaf entrepreneurs should take into account internal success factors such as education, knowledge, and skills. Meanwhile, external success factors such as financial resources.
