Abstract
Scholars among the four mazhabs agree that women must cover their aurat and maintain good manners while travelling. However, they have different views regarding the limitations of covering the aurat and the existence of maḥram while travelling. The difference involves few matters due to the absence of regular nas (qat'i). Now the times have changed. Women are able to leave their homes safely and participate in various employment sectors. The reason for this change requires in depth research involving women's auraṯ law from the aspects of association, worship and career. Similarly, women's travel for the purposes of employment and tourism is also becoming increasingly common. This study aims to examine the legal rulings concerning women's aurat and travel based on the perspectives of the four mazhabs, as well as the views of religious figures on social media. This study adopts a qualitative research methodology. Data were collected through document analysis, focusing on primary Islamic legal sources, including verses from the Qur’an, Hadith, authoritative texts by scholars representing the four mazhabs, as well as the views and interpretations of contemporary religious figures active on social media platforms. The data were analyzed using inductive, deductive and comparative methods in order to derive legal conclusions that are responsive to contemporary contexts and circumstances. The findings of the study reveal that scholars from all four mazhabs unanimously and explicitly hold the view that it is obligatory for Muslim women to observe proper covering of the aurat in social interactions, acts of worship and professional settings. This study also identified notable divergences among scholars concerning the delimitation of women’s aurat in social interactions, as well as the absolute or non-absolute requirement of a mahram’s presence during women’s travel. Analysis of opinions expressed by religious figures on social media platforms, including youtube and blogs, revealed that only 30.40% of these views are consistent with the interpretations of the four mazhabs, whereas 60.60% deviate from these traditional positions. Conversely, perspectives regarding women’s travel showed full 100% conformity with the rulings of the four mazhabs.
